Ferrari at Aberdeen University

Shell and the Ferrari F1 Racing Team hosted an exciting day at the University of Aberdeen on Tuesday 18th November.  Thirteen pupils from Dyce Academy attended.  Following a talk about forces the pupils got into teams and constructed a K’Nex car that used gears to help it race down a purpose-built track way.  They were then asked to rejig their designs to enable them to climb the two hills placed on the track. The times of the cars were then taken together over the two runs and one of the Dyce Academy teams was the fastest.  The 4 boys were presented with a fantastic watch each by Ferrari test driver Marc Gene.  Marc spent time with all the teams and signed pictures for the pupils.

The second part of the day took place at Satrosphere with a variety of science-based activities which included building a small kit car powered by salt water.  All the pupils really enjoyed this activity and were pleased to take their cars home. Pupil accounts of the day and more photographs will appear in the end of term Update.

Scottish Parliament Visit – 18 November

Twenty two S3 pupils studying Modern Studies at Dyce Academy had a fascinating day visiting the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 18th November. Following an excellent Q&A session, they presented MSPs Mark McDonald and Richard Baker with a newly released Global Citizenship calendar marking six years of successful links with our partner schools in Kenya and South Sudan. Afterwards, they sat in the chamber to watch the final speech of First Minister, Alex Salmond.

KAFKAH and VSA Appeals 2014

The S3 BITS classes are planning to organise the Dyce Academy KAFKAH and VSA Appeals this year. To do this we need help from all pupils, parents and staff.

KAFKAH stands for Kids Acting for Kids Abroad and Home and this will help out kids this Christmas in Kosovo. We are looking for money donations to buy gifts or donated gifts such as stationery items, toiletries, clothing (not already worn), hard-boiled sweets, hair accessories, toys, jewellery etc.  These will go into shoe-boxes to be sent away.  Adding a £2 coin to each shoe-box will also help with transportation costs.

The VSA (Voluntary Service Aberdeen) Appeal helps out elderly people locally at Christmas time. We need non-perishable foods such as dried foods, pasta, tins, boiled sweets, jams, coffee, biscuits etc.  Please bring in a tin etc to your Register Class for this great cause.

We thank you very much for your help!
